Chapter Thirty-One
“One more.” I hold my finger up in salute. I wink at my fingernail. My cuticle comes into focus as the wall of bottled liquor blurs behind it.
The bartender fills my shot glass and hands it over with a disapproving look.
“This ends badly,” Alicia mutters, sliding my bar tab receipt closer and placing the pen in my hand.
“It already did. I’m just comancerating . . . er, comericating . . . nope.” Try again. “I’m commiserating . . . with myself.” I fumble with the pen but eventually manage my signature and pocket my credit card.
“Bravo. Only three tries.” Callie claps but the shift in balance pushes her over the edge of her barstool and sends her toward the floor in slow motion. It’s funny as shit and I try not to giggle.
“Last call”—Alicia huffs, catching Callie around the waist and helping her lean against the chair—“then I drive you two drunks home.”
“Fine.” I throw back my shot. The liquor hardly burns. My mouth is almost as numb as my heart. I know Alicia’s only looking out. Besides, there’s no reason to stay here. The bartender cut me off with this one. “Yo, Leonardo. Thanks for the dranks.” I wink to my new best buddy.
“His name is Raphael.” Alicia digs in her purse for a twenty and slaps it onto the bar. I think she apologizes to him, but I’m preoccupied with keeping the room straight.
“Whatever.” I blink and widen my stance so I won’t tip over. “I knew it was one of the turtles.”
“You’re so weird.” Callie laughs and taps my nose. “I love you, weirdo face.”
“Okay, can we save this for the ride home. Please tell me you can both walk.”
“I can fucking run a race right now.” I straighten my spine and clap my hands together. “Let’s do this.”
“You’re not running. Here.” Alicia reaches for my arm and puts it around her waist. Then does the same on her opposite side with Callie. “Let’s go.”
“This one of those fucking three legged races? ’Cause I always win at picnic games.”
Callie giggles, then almost trips.
“Pull your shit together, Gordon. We’ve got a race to win!” I boom at Callie.
“Sorry, we’re leaving!” Alicia apologizes to the people we pass on our way out and shoves us all toward the door. “I’m really sorry.”
“Jesus.” I shake my head. “Don’t hafta be that sorry.”
“Hafta?” Alicia lifts her eyebrow.
“It’s have and to mushed together ’cause my lips are tired.” I sigh. Suddenly it’s not only my lips that are tired. My eyes burn and when we get to Alicia’s car, I take a break, closing my eyelids and pressing my face against the cold metal.
Alicia’s body is warm as she jostles me in through the open door. “Just don’t throw up in my car, m’kay?”
I didn’t barf in her car. I held it in and tossed my cookies on the front lawn of my rental like a dignified person. “Are you so proud of me?”
“So, so proud,” Alicia says, shuffling me inside and depositing me on the couch.
